osteocytes mature bone cells located in individual lacunae
lacunae chambers- each contains an osteocyte
concentric lamellae (layers)- matrix
collagen 1/3 weight- more flexibility
calcium phosphate 2/3 weight- provides strength or hardness
calcium phosphate interacts with calcium hydroxide to form hydroxyapatite
hydroxyapatite crystals- most compact bone
interstitial lamellae fills the spaces between the osteons
