| periosteum | - dense irregular connective tissue with a cellular inner layer - continuous tendons and ligaments - surrounds the entire bone - blood vessels and nerve fibers |
| epiphyses | enlarged end of long bones (contains spongy bones) |
| metaphyses | necks (junctions between epipyses and diaphysis) |
| diaphysis | - (shaft) - compact bone - harder and outer layer |
| medullary cavity | - contains yellow bone marrow (fat storage) |
| endosteum | - incomplete layer of flattened stem cells - active during bone growth, repair, and remodeling - covers the trabeculae of spongy bone and lines the inner surfaces of centeral canals |
