Term | Definition |

Standardized tests | is any form of test that (1) requires all test takers to answer the same questions, or a selection of questions from common bank of questions, in the same way. |
Formal Assessment | are tests that systematically measure how well a student has mastered learning outcomes. |
Informal Assessment | are not data driven but rather content and performance driven. For example, running records are informal assessments because they indicate how well a student is reading a specific book. |
Achievement Test | is designed to measure the knowledge and skills students learned in school or to determine the academic progress they have made over a period of time |
Aptitude Test | attempt to predict a student’s ability to succeed in an intellectual or physical endeavor by, for example, evaluating mathematical ability, language proficiency, abstract reasoning, motor coordination, or musical talent. |
Norm-Referenced Test | tests report whether test takers performed better or worse than a hypothetical average student, which is determined by comparing scores against the performance results of statistically selected group of test takers who have already taken the exam. |
Criterion-Referenced Test | tests and assessments are designed to measure student performance against a fixed set of predetermined criteria or learning standards |
Holistic Scoring | Standards based tests use holistic grading to establish scoring of a paper. It can also be used to assess classroom-based work. |
Analytical Scoring | Rather than simply balancing strengths and weaknesses on key criteria to reach an overall score for the effectiveness of a piece of writing, analytic scoring calls for teachers to provide feedback on each of the noted criteria for the writing assignment. |
Diagnostic Assessment | is an essential device in a teacher's “tool kit”. It can be used to diagnose strengths and areas of need in all students. |
Summative Assessment | are used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period—typically at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year. |
Formative Assessment | is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment. |
