Secede | To withdraw from the Union. |
Border States | The states of Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. |
Civilians | A person not in the military. |
Habeas Corpus | The right to have charges filed or a trial before jailed. |
Privateers | Civilian boats fitted with guns and armed to be used in wartime. |
Blockade Runners | A ship or person that runs through a blockade. |
Antiseptic | Something acting or protecting like an antiseptic. |
Minie Ball | A rifle bullet with a conical head used in muzzle-loading firearms. |
Artillery | Weapons (as bows, slings, and catapults) for discharging missiles. |
Copperheads | People in the northern states who sympathized with the South during the Civil War. |
Conscription | Enrolling people in the military. |
Bounties | A reward, premium, or subsidy especially when offered or given by a government: as A: an extra allowance to induce entry into the armed services. B: a grant to encourage an industry. C: a payment to encourage the destruction of noxious animals. |
Skirmish | A minor fight in war usually incidental to larger movements. |
Seige | A: military blockade of a city or fortified place to compel it to surrender. B: a persistent or serious attack (as of illness). |
Muster | To cause to gather; to bring together. |
Anesthetic | A substance that produces anesthesia; something that brings relief. |
Cavalry | An army component mounted on horseback. |
A Score | Twenty years. |
Emancipate | To free from restraint, control, or the power of another; to free from bondage. |
Profiteer | One who makes what is considered an unreasonable profit especially on the sale of essential goods during times of emergency. |
Daguerreotype | An early photograph produced on a silver or a silver-covered copper plate. |
Martial Law | The law applied in occupied territory by the military authority of the occupying power; the law administered by military forces that is invoked by a government in an emergency when the civilian law enforcement agencies are unable to maintain public order |
Johnny Reb | A nickname for a Confederate soldier. |
Billy Yank | A nickname for a Union soldier. |
Flank | The right or left of a formation. |
Infantry | Soldiers trained, armed, and equipped to fight on foot. |
Casualty | A military person lost through death, wounds, injury, sickness, internment, or capture or through being missing in action. |
Pook Turtles | The nickname given to seven ironclad Union gunboats created by Samuel Pook. |
Tax-In-Kind | The tax in the Confederacy that required all farmers to turn over one tenth of their crops to the government. |
Total War | Destroying the enemy's ability to fight. |
