Assessment Procedures and Materials

Summative Evaluation Informal procedure used to assess student achievement and teacher instruction.
Standards Based Assessment Formal evaluation that measures progress toward meeting goals or standards.
Portfolio Assessment An informal method of gathering information based on completed products over a period of time.
Performance Assessment An informal measure used to assess a student's ability to complete a task specific to a topic or subject area.
Observation Teachers or professionals watch a student in several settings and take notes regarding performance and behaviors.
Norm Referenced Test Formal tool referred to as a standardized test is used when comparing a student to other peers in the same age group, primarily helpful in developing curriculum and identifying interventions needed.
Intelligence Test A norm referenced test used to assess a student's learning abilities or intellectual capacity as it measures cognitive behaviors.
Functional Behavior Assessment The process of gathering information about problem behaviors of an individual student and used to evaluate the need for behavior intervention and a behavior plan.
Ecological Based Assessment Involves the use of an informal observation of the student interacting with the environment during a regular schedule.
Curriculum Based Measure Evaluates student progress and performance of skills based on the curriculum and lessons presented.
Criterion Referenced Tests A formal measure that evaluates a student on specified information, most often used to check a student's knowledge on subject areas by answering specific questions and does not compare one student to others.
Behavior Assessment A variety of behavior assessment tools are available to track student behaviors and to document progress on a behavior intervention plan or on the use of self management techniques.
Authentic Assessment An informal assessment used to determine a student's comprehension and performance of a skill.
Aptitude Test A formal measure of standardized or norm referenced tests that evaluate a student's ability to acquire skills or gain knowledge.
Anecdotal Record An informal measurement of teach notes based on observation of student work and performance.
Active Student Response A frequency based measure used to determine a student's participation rate during an instructional period.
Achievement Test A formal tool used to measure student knowledge or proficiency in a subject or topic area.
