Lecture 1.1 (part1)
Element 1- Anatomy: Terminology and Tissues of the body
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Define FLEXION | Bending movement around the joint of a limb (elbow, knee etc.) that decreases the size of the angle between the bones of the limb at the joint |
| Define EXTENSION | An unbending movement around the joint of a limb (elbow, knee etc.) that increases the angle between the bones of the limb at the joint |
| Define ABDUCTION | To draw away (as a limb) from a position near or parallel to the median axis of the body |
| Define ADDUCTION | To come towards (as a limb) to the limb's natural position near or parallel to the median axis of the body |
| Define CIRCUMDUCTION | The movement of a limb or extremity so that the distal end travels in a circle and the proximal end remains fixed |
| Define INTERNAL ROTATION | Rotation of an extremity towards the median line of the body |
| Define EXTERNAL ROTATION | Rotation of an extremity away from the median line of the body |
| Define AXIAL ROTATION | Rotating around the spine |
| Define PRONATION | Rotation of the hand and forearm so the palm faces backwards or downwards |
| Define SUPINATION | Rotation of the hand and forearm so the palm faces forwards or upwards |
| Define PLANTARFLEXION | Movement of the foot that extends the foot and toes downwards towards the sole |
| Define DORSIFLEXION | Movement of the foot that flexes the foot and toes upwards away from the sole. |
| Define INVERSION | The foot is rotated inwards so sole is towards midline |
| Define EVERSION | Foot is rotated outwards lso sole is away from midline |
| Define DEPRESSION | A displacement downwards or inwards (e.g. shoulders) |
| Define ELEVATION | A displacement upwards or outwards (e.g. shoulders) |
| Define PROTRACTION | The act of moving an anatomical part forward anteriorly |
| Define RETRACTION | The act of moving an anatomical part behind the body posteriorly |
