movements the ligaments cause or prevent
| ligament | movement |
|---|---|
| iliofemoral ligament | limits extension, adduction and external rotation |
| pubofemoral ligament | limits abduction, extension and external rotation |
| ischiofemoral ligament | limits extension, abduction and internal rotation |
| transverse ligament | increases stability |
| ligamentum teres | no mechanical function |
| tibial collateral (medial) ligament (knee) | limits extention, medial rotation and prevents abduction |
| fibular collateral (lateral) ligament (knee) | limits extension, lateral rotation and prevents adduction |
| anterior cruciate ligament | prevents adduction and anterior slide of tibia |
| posterior cruciate ligament | prevents posterior slide of tibia and limits medial rotation |
| patellar ligament | limits superior movement of patella |
| oblique popliteal ligament | limits extension |
| arcuate popliteal ligament | limits extension |
| medial collateral ligament (ankle) | limits PF, DF and eversion |
| anterior talofibular ligament | limits PF |
| posterior talofibular ligament | limits DF |
| anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments | limits inversion |
| anterior longitudinal ligament | limits extension |
| posterior longitudinal ligament | limits flexion |
| supraspinous ligament | limits flexion |
| interspinous ligament | limits flexion |
| intertransverse ligament | limits lateral flexion |
