Anatomy

DiarthrosisDescription
hinge spool-shaped surface fits into concave surface (e.g. elbow, knee, ankle)
pivot arch-shaped surface rotates about rounded or peglike pivot (e.g. between axis and atlas)
ball and socket ball-shaped head fits into concave socket (e.g. shoulder joint, hip joint)
condyloid oval-shaped condyle; fits into elliptical cavity (e.g. wrist joint between the radius and carpals)
saddle saddle-shaped bone fits into socket that is curved in opposite direction (e.g. thumb, between first metacarpal and carpal)
gliding articulating surfaces; usually flat (e.g. between carpal bones; between sacrum and ilium)
