| hinge | spool-shaped surface fits into concave surface (e.g. elbow, knee, ankle) |
| pivot | arch-shaped surface rotates about rounded or peglike pivot (e.g. between axis and atlas) |
| ball and socket | ball-shaped head fits into concave socket (e.g. shoulder joint, hip joint) |
| condyloid | oval-shaped condyle; fits into elliptical cavity (e.g. wrist joint between the radius and carpals) |
| saddle | saddle-shaped bone fits into socket that is curved in opposite direction (e.g. thumb, between first metacarpal and carpal) |
| gliding | articulating surfaces; usually flat (e.g. between carpal bones; between sacrum and ilium) |
