MT Anatomical terms
body directions, cavities, planes, regions, and divisions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anterior/Ventral | stomach, face, palms forward |
| Posterior/Dorsal | back, arse, fingernails pointed back |
| Prone | Lying on the anterior of the body |
| Supine | Lying on the posterior of the body |
| Superior | upper half of the body |
| Inferior | lower half of the body |
| Distal | Move out from the main body (ie hip to leg, shoulder to arm) |
| Proximal | moving in towards the main body |
| cephalad | moving towards the head |
| caudad | moving towards the tail |
| lateral | towards the sides of the body |
| medial | towards the midline of the body |
| external | outside of the body (superficial) |
| internal | inside of the body (deep) |
| Coronal/Frontal Plane | anterior/posterior |
| Sagittal Plane | Right/Left |
| midsagittal plane | equal right and left halves |
| transverse plane | upper/lower halves |
| Cranial cavity | brain, cranium |
| Spinal cavity | Spinal cord, spine, nerves to rest of body |
| Thoracic cavity | lungs, heart, esophagus, trachea, breastbone, ribs and dorsal spinal column |
| Abdominal cavity | digestive organs |
| Diaphragm | separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities |
| Pelvic cavity | not separated from abdominal cavity, below, contains urinary and reproductive organs. |
