Direct versus indirect taxes Direct tax- a tax paid directly by the person or organization on whom it is levied. Example: Income Tax Indirect tax- a tax on goods/services. Paid to business and passed on to government: Example: gasoline, liquor and airline tickets

What are the specific duties of the Speaker of the House? - must preside over the House when in session - they also play a key role in committee assignments - they appoint the party's leadership - control which bills go to which committee - recognize speakers (give power to speak on the house floor)
List and describe four types of committees in the House or Representatives 1) Standing committees are permanent subject-matter committees, formed to handle bills in different policy areas. Each chamber has its own committees and subcommittees.
List and describe four types of committees in the House or Representatives 2) Joint committees are study committees that exist in a few policy areas, with membership drawn from both the Senate and the House.
List and describe four types of committees in the House or Representatives 3) Conference committees are formed to work out the differences when different versions of a bill are passed by the two houses. Membership is drawn from both houses.

Explain the significance of the conference committee In order to become law, bills from house and senate must be reconciled. The conference committee is formed to work out the differences when different versions of a bill are passed by the two houses. Membership is drawn from both houses
Describe the steps for introducing a bill into the House In the House any member may introduce a bill by dropping it into the hopper, a bill clerk assigns a number that begins with H.R. A reading clerk then reads the bill to the Representatives and the Speaker sends the bill to one of the standing committees.
Describe the steps for introducing a bill into the Senate In senate a member may introduce a bill after being recognized by the presiding officer.it goes through many of the same steps it went through in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill is discussed in a Senate committee.
Explain the actions the president can take when he/she receives a bill passed by both houses (Two of total of four possible) 1) President signs the bill into law 2) President veto's the bill
Explain the actions the president can take when he/she receives a bill passed by both houses (Two of total of four possible) 3) President allows the bill to become law without signing it (by not acting on it within 10 days of receiving it) 4) Pocket Veto - Congress adjourns it session within 10 days of submitting the bill to the President, and he does not sign it
Explain how Congress has attempted to limit the president’s ability to fight wars without declaring wars War Powers Resolution: requires President to notify Congress (48 hours) committing orces to military action. Forbids armed forces from remaining (60+days)(30 day withdrawal), without an authorization of the use of military force or a declaration of war
What is the “Congressional power of the purse,” ? Congressional exclusive power to authorize expenditures by all avenues of the federal government.
Why is the power of the purse important? Since Congress can approve/deny funding requests from executive branch. Congress can in effect prevent president from carrying out policies they disagree with.
