English II Study Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Allusion | reference to a statement, historical event, literature, religion, mythology |
| Paradox | statement or situation that the seems to be a contradiction but reveals a truth. |
| Imagery | language the appeals to the senses. Most images are visual- they create pictures in the reader's mind by appealing to the senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, hear) |
| Personification | kind on metaphor in which human qualities are given to something non-human. |
| Symbol | person, place, thing, or event that stands for itself and for something beyond itself as well |
| Allegory | a narrative in which characters and settings stand for abstract ideas or moral qualities |
| Ambiguity | an element of uncertainty in a text, in which something can be interpreted in a number of different ways. |
| Satire | type of writing that ridicules something- a person, a group of people, humanity large, an attention or failing, a social institution- in order to reveal a weakness. |
| Simile | a comparison that uses the words "like" or "as" |
| Metaphor | a comparison the doesn't use the word "like" or "as" |
| Hyperbloe | an exaggeration used to express strong emotion |
| Pun | A play on multiple meanings of a word or no two words that sound alike but have different meanings |
| Idiom | expression peculiar to a particular language that means something different from the literal meaning of the word |
| Foreshadow | the use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot |
| Flashback | Interrupts the present action of the plot to flash backward and tell what happened at an earlier time |
| Summary | giving a general recap of what was said/ writtem |
| Paraphrase | using your own words to repeat what was said/written. A paraphrase will be more detailed than a summary |
| Web Source | remember, .edu, and .gov are the most reliable types of websites for research |
| Oxymoron | Ex. seriously joking, jumbo shrimp, silent scream d |
| Thesis | the idea of the story |
| Fact vs opinion | If it is proven true it's a fact but if not its an opinion |
| Critique | someones opinion on how to fix something |
| Cause and effect | If something happens, what is the aftermath of it |
| Semi colon | is how to separate two sentences without using a fanboy |
