| honeymoon period | A period of highted popularity for the president after the elections |
| gridlock | Political stalemate between the executive and legeslative branches |
| veto | The rejection of a legislative act by the executive branch |
| pocket veto | Effective veto of a bill when congress adjourns within 10 days of it passing and the president fails to sign it |
| override | Voting in congress to enact legislation vetoed by the president: requires a two thirds vote in both house and senate |
| line-item veto | Power of the chief executive to reject some portions of a bill without rejecting all of it. |
