| Political parties | Voluntary association of people who seek to control the government through common principles, based on peaceful and legal actions such as the winning of elections |
| majority | The majority of justices agree on the decision &the reasons for th edecision |
| plurality | the number of votes cast for a candidate who receives more than any other but does not receive an absolute majority. |
| Democratic Party | The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States |
| Republican Party | The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States |
| GOP | Abbreviation for Grand Old Party, another name for the Republican Party |
| New Deal | Alliance of southern conservatives, religious, and ethnic minorities who supported the Democratic Party for 40 years |
| Reagan Coalition | the combination of voters that Republican Ronald Reagan assembled to produce a major political realignment with his landslide in the 1980 United States Presidential Election |
| responsible party model | with both parties play- ing important roles in government |
| nominee | a person who is proposed or formally entered as a candidate for an office or as the recipient of a grant or award. |
| nomination | the action of nominating or state of being nominated. |
| primary election | Nominating election held to choose party candidates who will run in the general election |
| machine | a tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action |
| patronage | the power to control appointments to office or the right to privileges. |
| divided party government | a situation in which one party controls the White House and another party controls one or both houses of the United States Congress |
| caucus | Locally held meeting in a state to select delegates who, in turn, will nominate candidates to political offices |
| closed primary | Only registered party members may vote in the primary (independents, greens, etc...not allowed) |
| open primary | registered voters can vote in either primary-do not have to register with any party. |
| general election | Voters choose officeholder form among all the candidates nominated by pol. parties/running as independents |
| ticket splitter | split ticket refers to an election in which the voter has chosen candidates from different political parties when multiple offices are being decided by a single election |
| convention | an agreement between countries covering particular matters, especially one less formal than a treaty. |
| delegates | a person sent or authorized to represent others, in particular an elected representative sent to a conference. |
| superdelegates | Party officials in the Democratic Party who attend the national convention without having to run in primaries or caucuses |
| dealignment | trend or process whereby a large portion of the electorate abandons its previous partisan affiliation, without developing a new one to replace it |
| realignment | terms from political science and political history describing a dramatic change in the political system |
| third party | Any other party besides the Democratic and Republican parties |
