The Fertile Crescent Another name for the area surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers; shaped like a partial moon
Mesopotamia Another name for the area surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers; it was the first civilization to form
Geographic luck There are advantages when you have plants and animals to domesticate, and the right climate for growing an abundance of crops
civilization a complex community that had advanced social institutions, dense population, and specialization
social hierarchy the ranking of individuals based on wealth, power, blood lines, or influence
scribe One who specializes in writing down documents
specialization in a civilization when people adopt different jobs like artisan or priest that don’t involve growing or gathering food
laborer one who worked as a farmer, builder, or general worker in Era 2.
elite a group of people considered to be the best in their society based on wealth, power, talent, or other characteristic
polytheistic the practice of believing in more than one god; Egypt and Sumer both had this characteristic
pharaoh a living god according to the Egyptians
primary source This comes from an eyewitness to an event usually written shortly after the event has taken place
secondary source This does not come from an eyewitness, and it could be a blending of a number of different sources gathered over a long period of time.
