Chapter 7 Ethnicity Vocabulary

Ethnicity refers to a group of people who share a common identity
Diaspora experiences of people who come from a common ethnic background but live in different regions or ethnic neighborhoods
Charter Group the first ethnic group to establish cultural norms in an area
Ethnic Enclaves a relatively small area occupied by a distinct culture or ethnicity which largely results from chain migration
Ethnic Neighborhoods concentrations of people from the same ethnicity in certain pockets of the city
Ethnic Provinces when entire regions become associated with ethnic or racial aggregations
Ethnic Islands small, rural areas settled by a single ethnic group as opposed to ethnic neighborhoods or enclaves, which are urban
Syncretism the development of a new cultural trait as a result of the fusion of two distinct but interacting cultures
Social Distance measure of the perceived differences between an immigrant ethnic group and the charter or host society
Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide cleansing involves the effort to rid a country or region of everyone a particular ethnicity either through forced migration or genocide
Apartheid the physical separation of different races into different geographic areas
Balkanization the process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among its ethnicities -- as a threat to peace throughout the world, not just in a small area
Balkanized used to describe a small geographic area that could not successfully be organized into one or more stale states because it was inhabited by many ethnicities with complex, long-standing antagonisms toward each other
Blockbusting when regal estate agents convinced white homeowners living near a black area to sell their homes at low prices, preying on their fears that black families would soon move into the neighborhood and cause property values to decline
Centripetal Force an attitude that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state
Multinational State contain two ethnic groups with traditions of self-determinism that agree to coexist peacefully by recognizing each other as distinct nationalities
Nationalism a loyalty and devotion to a nationality
Nationality identity with a group of people who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country
Nation-State a state whose territory corresponds to that occupied by a particular ethnicity that has been transformed into a nationality
Race identity with a group of people who share a biological ancestor
Racism the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
Racist a person who subscribes to the beliefs of racism
Self-determination the concept that ethnicities have the right to govern themselves
Sharecropper a person who works fields rented from a landowner and pays the rent by turning over to the landowner a share of the crops
Triangular Slave Trade an efficient triangular trading pattern
Multi-ethnic State a state that contains more than one ethnicity
