What is a Social Contract? It is an agreement between the government and the citizens. Citizens agree to follow the laws in while the government protects the citizens' freedoms.
What document is the Supreme Law of the Land? The U.S. Constitution
What are the key freedoms protected by the First Amendment? Freedom of speech, religion, press, right to assemble peacefully, right to petition
What were the positive features of the Articles of Confederation? All states had an equal vote. The government could also coin money; they also set up a post office.
What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? There was no executive branch, no judicial branch, no power to tax, no national army
Why did Anti-Federalists want a Bill of Rights added before they would ratify the Constitution? They wanted citizens' rights to be guaranteed in writing, not just built into structure of the the government.
What are some ways our government creates a more perfect union? We elect our leaders, our branches can check over each other, we protect our rights with a bill of rights.
Is your locker protected by the 4th amendment? It is not technically your private property. It can be searched if there is reason of suspicion.
What is the fundamental purpose of our government according to the Declaration of Independence? Protect our natural rights
What is the responsibility of the citizens according to the Declaration of Independence? They agree to be governed and follow laws (such as being safe and paying your taxes)
What is the source of power of our government according to the Declaration of Independence? We are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. The government only gets its rights through the consent of the governed?
What is the consent of the governed? Permission by the people for the government to take action
What are some of the biggest violations stated under the "Abuses of the King" section of the Declaration of Independence? Not listening to complaints, using excessive force, denied the right to vote, influenced the courts unfairly, violated free trade
What was the intent of writing the Declaration of Independence? "When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another..." No choice but to form a new government that responds to the people
What were the main ideas of John Locke? Trust the people. State governments are better than a corrupt big government
What were the main ideas of Thomas Hobbes? Don't trust the people: they are selfish and greedy. Only a big strong government can keep the people in order.
What were the main ideas of Montesquieu? Balance the power: checks and balances, separation of power, federalism
What are the foundational democratic principles of American government? life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, justice, general welfare, pursuit of happiness
What was the primary purpose of the Articles of Confederation? The founders wanted a government could hold the nation together, but not one with the abusive power of Great Britain.
What was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787? This was a plan to sell western lands to public to pay off war debts. The federal territory established was the Northwest Territory.
To form states out of the Northwest Territory, what were the requirements for the interested (potential) states? 1. Get 60,000 people to live there. 2. Draft a Constitution 3. Add a bill of rights 4. Provide a public education for citizens 5. Outlaw slavery
