The Legislative Branch Vocabulary

| Constituents | a member of the House Representatives. |
| bill | a proposed law. |
| interest groups | groups of people who work together for similar interests or goals. |
| lobbyists | people who represent interest groups |
| congressional district | the area that a member of the House Represents |
| budget | a plan for raising and spending money. |
| bill of attainder | a law that convicts a person of a crime without trial. |
| Speaker of the House | the presiding officer of the House of Representatives. |
| President Pro Tempore | an officer who presides over the Senate when the Vice President is absent/ |
| floor leaders | chief officers of the majority and minority parties in each house who guide the bills that their party supports through congress. |
| pocket veto | a way in which the president can veto a bill by pocketing or keeping and not signed. |
| filibuster | the use of long speeches to prevent a vote on a bill in the Senate. |
| cloture | agreement by 3/5's of the members of the Senate to end the debate on a bill and allow a vote on it. |
