The Legislative Branch Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Constituents a member of the House Representatives.
bill a proposed law.
interest groups groups of people who work together for similar interests or goals.
lobbyists people who represent interest groups
congressional district the area that a member of the House Represents
budget a plan for raising and spending money.
bill of attainder a law that convicts a person of a crime without trial.
Speaker of the House the presiding officer of the House of Representatives.
President Pro Tempore an officer who presides over the Senate when the Vice President is absent/
floor leaders chief officers of the majority and minority parties in each house who guide the bills that their party supports through congress.
pocket veto a way in which the president can veto a bill by pocketing or keeping and not signed.
filibuster the use of long speeches to prevent a vote on a bill in the Senate.
cloture agreement by 3/5's of the members of the Senate to end the debate on a bill and allow a vote on it.
