How long did the Paleolithic Era last? Approximately 200,000 years for modern humans (2.6 million from a Geological standpoint)
When was the last Ice Age? Approximately 19,500 to 11,500 years ago
What is the defining feature of the Paleolithic Era? The use of stone tools
What is the defining feature of the Neolithic Era? Putting plants and animals to use after the Great Thaw (farming)
What was the Great Thaw? the end of the last Ice Age (approximately 11,500 years ago)
What is a synonym for a forager? a hunter/gatherer
What is a surplus? Having more than you need
What is specialization? This is when people take on different roles or jobs that require unique skill sets
What is domestication? Taming of wild plants and animals to make them useful to humans
What is a settlement? a permanent community where people live
Where was Catalhoyuk? Modern Day Turkey
What was unique about Catalhoyuk? There is evidence that shows that this place was an organized, permanent settlement.
What was unusual about the housing in Catalhoyuk? The used a honeycomb design with no roads or doors. Entry took place through the roof.
Which social institution was clearly shown in the basement of Catalhoyuk houses? Religion
What does Agrarian mean? Farming
What does Industrial mean? The use of machines/factories to make products faster (to sell to a global market)
What is a key feature that foragers look for in the objects they lug around? Objects should be light and portable.
When were the cave paintings (the two rhinos) in France made? During the Paleolithic Era (50,000 years ago)
Was tundra the only biome during the Paleolithic Era? During the Ice Ages, yes. There were periods without Ice Ages, however.
What is kinship? People made social contact with neighboring groups (not just blood relations)
