Question | Answer |

Contraband | any unauthorized article or any authorized article in excessive quantities |
Hard contraband | any item that is a violation of Florida State Statutes or poses a serious threat to the safety and security of the facility |
Nuisance contraband | any item which may be or has been authorized for possession at one time, but which is prohibited when excessive or altered |
Frisk Search | - a search of a clothed person performed by an officer in an attempt to determine if the individual is concealing contraband |
Strip Search | - Search conducted by having an arrested person remove or arrange some or all of his or her clothing so as to permit a visual inspection of the genitals, buttocks, anus, and/or breasts in the case of a female |
Body Cavity Search | a forensic internal search of the body cavities of an inmate. |
Probable Cause | the officer's knowledge of facts and circumstances based on reasonable trustworthy information |
Reasonable Suspicion | standard in which a person in the same circumstances could reasonably believe a person is engaged in crime |
Conducting searches will protect the safety | of personnel, inmates, and others within Department of Corrections facilities |
It will also prevent the introduction | of weapons and contraband into the facility |
Searches will be conducted in the most discreet manner possible | using officers of the same sex to search when possible |
Male officers will not search a female | unless there is reason to believe a weapon is present, and a female officer is not available |
Female officers will search females | The procedures in this directive will also apply to juvenile inmates |
During searches, inmates may create | distractions or incidents hoping officers will discontinue the search, |
If a search is interrupted for any reason | officers shall ensure that the search is completed as soon as practical |
A successful frisk search must be performed | in an orderly and systematic manner in accordance with training |
Once the restraints are removed | a more thorough search will be conducted according to training |
