| Cabinet | list of Presidential advisors |
| electoral college | a select group of delegates who should follow the popular vote in a Presidential election, but are not obligated to do so. |
| Judiciary Act of 1789 | This set up three levels of federal courts: Supreme Court, Federal Court of Appeals, and the Federal District Courts |
| strict interpretation | When you follow the Constitution word for word, and do not give the government any extra power |
| loose interpretation | When you allow the government to act, even if the Constitution does not state that power word for word |
| bond | a loan to the government (which should be paid back with interest) |
| speculator | someone who takes a risk in the hopes of making big profits |
| protective tariff | a tax on foreign goods supported by Hamilton |
| Federalist | political position of Alexander Hamilton that favored a strong national government |
| Anti-Federalist | political position of Thomas Jefferson that favored a strong state government |
| farmer | main occupation for many of Jefferson's supporters |
| manufacturer | popular occupation for many of Hamilton's supporters |
| French Revolution | this conflict divided much of the new American nation |
| Neutrality Proclamation | Washington declared that the U.S. would not take sides if European countries were fighting each other. |
| privateers | private boat captains encouraged to fight in mercenary wars for money. |
| payment for damaged ships | These were paid by the British as a result of part 1 of Jay's Treaty |
| Caribbean islands | The trade ban on American ships was lifted as a result of part 2 of Jay's Treaty |
| Great Lakes Forts | These would be vacated by the British as a result of part 3 of Jay's Treaty. |
| British merchants | These people had their debts from the American Revolution paid by the American government as a result of part 4 of Jay's Treaty. |
| Pinckney's Treaty | Spain adjusted the border of Florida and opened the trade port of New Orleans in American merchants as a result of this deal. |

| Sedition Act | people could not write false or hostile things about the government; they also could not join plots against the government |
| The Kentucky and Viriginia Resolutions | These states said they would not follow the Alien and Sedition Acts (states acting like the Supreme Court) |
| XYZ Affair | France wanted a bribe before discussing their taking of our sailors; we prepared for war |
