Classification of Inmates

QuestionAnswer
The primary objective of Objective Correctional Classification is to place inmates in the type of housing that best meet security and/or medical needs
and to provide reasonable protection for the inmates as well as all employees
Inmates with disabilities will be housed in a general population housing area with designated accommodation cells and will not be housed separately
presents a threat to employees, other inmates and/or if identified as a self–harm risk
All inmates will be classified as soon as practical after admission to determine the level of custody required
suitable housing assignment and their eligibility for appropriate programs to include educational, rehabilitative and/or work
For housing purposes, inmates should be separated in the following manner
Adult female unsentenced felons (Medium or Maximum Security
Adult female unsentenced misdemeanants (Medium Security
Adult female sentenced (Medium or Maximum Security
Adult male unsentenced felons (Medium or Maximum Security
Adult male unsentenced misdemeanants (Medium Security
Adult male sentenced (Medium or Maximum Security); and Juveniles. (Maximum Security
Dangerous/Violent felons shall not be housed with misdemeanants
However non dangerous or violent felons may be housed with misdemeanants
The determination whether an inmate is considered a dangerous/violent felon shall be made on a case–by–case basis by the officer–in–charge or designee using current classification guidelines
Male and female inmates will be housed separately and separated by sight and sound.
Sound separation is defined as any separation that restricts normal verbal communications
When an officer becomes aware of an inmate who medical personnel has determined should be housed on a lower tier or a lower bunk, the officer will
Ensure the inmate is moved to a lower tier or bunk
Make a notation in the blank area on the front of the inmate's locator card (PDF only
and Ensure the appropriate special condition entry has been made in Correctional Management Information System (CMIS) by the Division of Health Services
A Watch Lieutenant or higher authority must approve the return of any inmate from the Prisons Division (MCC and CTC) to the Jails Division
if the inmate is being returned due to an escape charge or behavioral problem
A copy of an e–mail stating why the inmate is being returned and containing the authorizing Watch Lieutenant's name must be placed in the inmate's institutional file
