| Political Party | Group of people who seek to control government through the winning of elections on the holding of public office |
| Major Party | Political party having electoral strength sufficient to permit it to win control of a government |
| Partisan | Law maker who owes their first allegiance to their political party and votes according to the party line |
| Bipartisan | Supported by two parties |
| Minor Party | A political party whose electoral strength is so weak that it has little chance of gaining control of a government. |
| Consensus | General agreement among various groups on fundamental matters, broad agreement on public questions. |
| Two-party System | Where two major political parties dominate politics within a government. |
| Incumbent | The current office holder |
| Ideological Parties | Based on a particular set of beliefs, a comprehensive view of social, economic, and political matters. |
| Single-issue Parties | Parties that concentrate on only one public policy matter |
| Economic Protest Parties | Rooted in poor economic times, lacking a clear ideological base, dissatisfied with current conditions, and demanding better times. |
| Splinter Parties | Split away from one of the major parties |
| Spilt Ticket Voting | Voting for candidates of different parties for different offices at the same election |

| Registration | Procedure of voter identification intended to prevent fraudulent voting |
| Political Socialization | A lifelong process by which individuals learn political attitudes and behaviors |
