| Political Party | an organised group of people with at least roughly similar political aims and opinions, that seeks to influence public policy by getting its candidates elected to public office. |
| Two-party system | two major political parties dominate politics within a government |
| Third Party | political parties in the United States from 1854 until the mid-1890s that featured profound developments in issues of American nationalism, modernization, and race. |
| Platform | the declared policy of a political party or group. |
| caucus | a meeting of the members of a legislative body who are members of a particular political party, to select candidates or decide policy. |
| Political machine | political organization in which an authoritative boss or small group commands the support of a corps of supporters and businesses |
| Direct PRimary | a primary where voters directly select the candidates who will run for office |
| Closed Primary | A type of direct primary limited to registered party members, who must declare their party affiliation in order to vote |
| Open Primary | a primary election in which voters are not required to declare party affiliation. |
| Plurality | the excess of votes received by the leading candidate, in an election in which there are three or more candidates, over those received by the next candidate |
| Majority | the number by which votes for one candidate in an election are more than those for all other candidates combined. |
| Petition | a formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause. |
| Polling Place | a building where voting takes place during an election, typically one that normally has another function, such as a school. |
| Ballot | a process of voting, in writing and typically in secret. |
| Absentee Ballot | a ballot completed and typically mailed in advance of an election by a voter who is unable to be present at the polls. |
| Returns | give, put, or send (something) back to a place or person. |
| Exit Poll | a poll of people leaving a polling place, asking how they voted. |
| Electorate | all the people in a country or area who are entitled to vote in an election. |
| Proposition | a suggested scheme or plan of action, especially in a business context. |
| referendum | a general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision. |
| recall | officially order (someone) to return to a place. |
| Propaganda | information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. |
| Political Action Committee (PAC) | an organization that raises money privately to influence elections or legislation, especially at the federal level. |
| Soft Money | a contribution to a political party that is not accounted as going to a particular candidate, thus avoiding various legal limitations. |
| Public Opinion | views prevalent among the general public. |
| Mass media | The media in large proportions |
| Interest group | a natural outgrowth of the communities of interests that exist in all societies |
| Public opinion poll | survey of public opinion from a particular sample |
| Pollster | a person who conducts or analyzes opinion polls. |
| Survey | an investigation of the opinions or experience of a group of people, based on a series of questions. |
| print media | a medium that disseminates printed matter |
| Electronic media | media that use electronics or electromechanical energy for the end user (audience) to access the content. |
| Public Agenda | nonprofit organization that helps diverse leaders and citizens navigate divisive and complex issues. |
| Prior restraint | judicial suppression of material that would be published or broadcast, on the grounds that it is libelous or harmful. |
| Malice | the intention or desire to do evil; ill will. |
| Regulatory | serving or intended to regulate something. |
| Nonpartisan | not biased or partisan, especially toward any particular political group. |
| Lobbyist | a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest; a member of a lobby. |
