Personal Appearance Regulations

Excluding those officers acting in an undercover capacity all personnel are expected to maintain a high standard of personal appearance and hygiene
All personnel are expected to adhere to the hairstyle, hair color, and facial hair regulations outlined below
Clothing shall be clean and neatly pressed, shoes and leather accessories clean and polished, and hair neatly trimmed, combed or styled, and clean
All employees shall ensure that their fingernails are maintained in a clean neatly trimmed manner so that the length does not interfere with the proper performance of their duties
Additionally, employees who are authorized to carry firearms, make arrests or are in contact with prisoners/inmates shall not have fingernails which extend more than 1/8" past the end of the finger
Negative associations are often related to personal appearance
It is incumbent upon all employees to present a positive and professional appearance
The only permitted hair colors of employees of the Sheriff's Office will be those colors that occur naturally
When a resolution cannot be made at a lower supervisory level the employee's commanding officer will make the determination of whether or not a hair color is appropriate for criminal justice purposes
Hair is evenly trimmed at all times while on–duty
Mustaches may be worn with the pattern neatly trimmed
The extent of the growth shall be limited to 1/4” inch below or beyond the line of the corner of the mouth
The thickness shall be no more than ¼” in depth and not appear bushy
The ends may not be waxed or twisted
Beards, goatees, and/or any other growth of hair below the lower lip, on the chin, or lower jawbone are prohibited unless a medical condition exists
The employee must complete an Americans with Disability Act (ADA) packet and send to the Personnel Division medical section designee
The ADA packet must include a detailed note from the treating medical provider specifying the necessity for the accommodation
The requesting employee will be notified of approval or denial by the medical section designee
Growth may not exceed ¼” in length and may not include thin lines, names, initials, lightning bolts, or any other designs
Contact lenses worn by employees shall only be in colors shapes and designs that occur naturally for the human eye
Tattoos are not permitted above the collar bone (e.g., neck, face, or behind the ear
or below the wrist (e.g., hands, fingers
Employees who were employed with the Sheriff’s Office and had a tattoo applied prior to 06/10/2014
are exempt from the restrictions of this paragraph
The Director of Professional Standards or higher authority will make the Determination
on the appropriateness of a tattoo
