Ch 11 Diagnositc Terms

| FLUTTER | rapid but regular contractions of atria and ventricles |
| FIBRILLATION | rapid, random, ineffectual, and irregular contractions of the heart |
| ISCHEMIA | Blood flow is decreased or stopped |
| HYPERTENSION | high blood pressure |
| MURMUR | an extra heart sound heard between normal beats |
| PERICARDITIS | inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart |
| ANEURYSM | local widening, dilation, of an arterial wall |
| VARICOSE VEINS | abnormally swollen and twisted veins usually occurring in the legs |
| ANGINA | chest pain resulting from a temporary deprivation of oxygen to the heart muscle |
| INFARCTION | area of dead tissue |
| OCCLUSION | closure of a blood vessel |
| CLAUDICATION | pain, tension, and weakness in a leg after walking has begun but absence of pain when at rest |
| EMBOLI | collection of materials that travel to and suddenly block a blood vessel. |
| ANGIOGRAM | a record of the x-ray imaging of blood vessels. |
| ANGIOPLASTY | surgical repair of a blood vessel |
| SYSTOL | contraction phase of the heartbeat |
| DIASTOLE | relaxation phase of the heartbeat |
| CORONARY | blood vessel that branch from the aorta and carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle |
| MYOCARDIUM | muscle layer of the heart |
| SPHYGMOMANOMETER | instrument to measure blood pressure |
| STETHOSCOPE | instrument used to listen to sounds within the body |
| MITRAL | valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart; bicusip valve |
