What is the name of the United States' first form of government? Articles of Confederation.
Why was America's first form of government a failure? Because it lacked federal government power. Plus, the states were acting as individual countries, not united states. Federal Government could not tax
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? To create a rough draft for a better government.
What was the New Jersey Plan? A congress representation plan, that favors small states. It proposes that each state, no matter the size, should get equal representation.
What was the Virginia Plan? A plan proposing representation in congress favoring large states. It proposed the number of congressmen per state should only be based on population.
What was the Great Compromise? A plan compromising Virginia and New Jersey's plans by having a bicameral house of congress. One with representatives (the number per state based on population), while the other had senators (every sate gets 2, no matter the population)
What was the 3/5th Compromise? A compromise to count each slave as 3/5th of a person, when determining each state's population.
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? First sentence of the Constitution, that introduces the needs and the base of the Constitution.
What does the word "Bicameral" mean? It means having two chambers or two houses.
What is the primary role of the Legislative Branch? The Legislative Branch is made up entirely of Congress. Congress' job is to create and propose new laws or bills.
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? The Executive Branch is made up of the President and everyone who works for him, like his Cabinet. Mr President main job is to enforce the laws
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? To interpret laws.
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives. 35 years old, live in the area you represent and have lived as a US citizen for 7 years
What are the requirements to be a Senator? 30 years old, live in the state you represent, and have lived in the US as a citizen for ten years.
What are the requirements to be President? 35 years old and be a natural born US citizen
What are the powers of the President? To act as the commander in-chief of the armed forces, sign off laws, control his cabinet members, chief diplomat, and nominate members Justices for the Supreme Court.
What are the powers of Congress? To propose and create bills, override the president, vote on decisions, power to impeach, coin money, regulate trade, create federal bank and postal service, approve presidential appointments, and declare war.
How long is the House of Representatives term? 2 years
How long is the Senator's term? 6 years
How long is the President's term? 4 years
How many Supreme Court Justices are there? 9 Justices
How long is the Supreme Court Justice's term? For Life
What is the main job of the Supreme Court? To interpret the Constitution and if laws are constitutional. Make the final court case decisions.
Why is the Supreme Court Justice's term so long? So they do not feel pressured to make a decision in fear of not being reelected
Who is the Chief Justice for the Supreme Court? John G. Roberts Jr.
What are the three levels of the federal court system? District Courts->Courts Of Appeal-> Supreme Court
What does the word "Appeal" mean? To apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court
What part of the government has to approve all Supreme Court Justices? The Executive branch nominates the Supreme Court Justices, but the Senate has to approve of the person.
What is Judicial Review? Review by the US Supreme Court of the constitutional validity of a legislative act.
What does the 1st Amendment protect? Freedom of Religion, Speech, Assembly, the Press, and right to petition the government.
What does the 2nd Amendment protect? Right to bear arms
What does the 3rd Amendment protect? Freedom not to be quarter soldiers
What does the 4th amendment protect? Right to no unnecessary searches and seizures.
The 5th, 6th, and 7th amendment protect your rights in... Court (Civil and Criminal)
What does the the 8th amendment protect? Against cruel and unusual punishment
What does the 9th amendment claim? All rights not given to the government, belong to the people.
What type of government does the 10th amendment protect? State Government
What is the Bill of Rights? The first 10 amendments to the Constitution

Who is the Vice President of the United States? Joe Biden
Who represents Massachusetts in the United States Senate? Elizabeth Warren Ed Markey

What are two ways to amend the Constitution? 3/4 of states approve 2/3 of congress
What are the 3 levels of government in the United States? Local State Federal

What is the main job of the Executive Departments? To advise the President
What does the Department of Defense oversee? In charge of military forces
What does the State Department oversee? Works out agreement with other countries

What does the Department of Interior oversee? Government Land
What does the Department of Homeland Security oversee? Minimize terrorist attacks and natural disasters
What does the Justice Department oversee? Enforces US government's laws
What does it mean to amend the Constitution? To change
Explain Congress' commerce clause? Gives Congress the power “to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes.”
Explain Congress' elastic clause? Granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the enumerated list of powers.
What is federalism? The federal principle or system of government.
What is the President in charge of as Commander in Chief? The armed forces
What is the President in charge of as Chief Diplomat? Decides how our country will act towards other countries
What is the President in charge of as Chief Economic Advisor? He must try to keep prices from going up, businesses busy, and our workers in jobs
What is double jeopardy and what amendment protects us from it? It is getting charged twice for the same crime, and the fifth amendment
What does it mean to plead the fifth? To remain silence in court, because whatever you say will be used against you
What is eminent domain? The right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
