What was the New Jersey Plan? Three branches of government. Congress has 1 house. Each state gets equal vote in congress.
What was the Virginia plan? 3 branches of government. 2 houses in congress. Representation in Congress was determined by population
What was the Great Comprimise? A plan where the representation in the House of Representatives was by population. Where as the Senate representation had each state with two votes
What was the 3/5 comprise? The 3/5 comprimise was when Madison proposed the idea that every slave is counted as 3/5 of a person when counting population for representation on the House of Representatives
Who was the main author of the constitution? James Madison
What is the preamble? The introduction to the constitution.
What does the word Bicameral mean? Having two parts involved in law making
What is the primary role of the legislative branch? To make laws.
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? To execute the laws that are made in congress. Enforce and announce them to the public. Carry out the laws Commander in Chief.
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? Interpret the amendments and what the constitution means. Decide the verdict of cases. Make sure laws are constitutional.
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? At least 25 years old and have been a citizen for 7 years. Live in district you represent
What are the requirements to be a Senator? At least 30 years old and have been a U.S. citizen for 9 years. Live in the state you Represent
What are the requirements to be a President? At least 35 years old, a natural born U.S citizen and have lived in the united States for 14 years
What are the powers of the President? Controlls Military. Make treaties. Nominate ambassadors and supreme court justices. Grant pardons. Carry out laws.
What are the powers of congress? Decide how to spend money raised through taxes. Raise army, navy. Declare WAR. Pay government debts. Grant citizenships. Make all laws which are necessary and proper" Make laws. Coin money. approve presidential nominations. Create a post office.
How long is a House of Representatives term? 2 years
How long is a senators term? 6 years
How long is a presidents term? 4 years
How many supreme court justices are there? 9
What does the first amendment protect? Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition
What does the 3 amendment protect? You don't have to house soldiers
What does the 4th amendment protect? Protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures. Police need a warrant from a judge to search your belongings or arrest you.
The 5,6 and 7 amendments protect your rights in...? courts
What does the 8 amendment protect? No cruel or unusual punishment. No excessive fee's or bails. Protection from these things before and after a trial.
How long is the supreme court justices term? For life
What is the main job of the Supreme court? Interpret the constitution/laws and make decisions in cases based on it.
Who is the chief Justice of the Supreme court? John G. Roberts
What are the three levels of federal court system? First the court is district court, then appellate court, finally the supreme court.
What does the word appeal mean? To ask a higher court to look at the case.
What part of the government has to approve all supreme court justices? senate
What is Judicial Review? It's a power where the Supreme court can look at decisions or laws that the legislative branch and executive branch made and decide if they're constitutional. If they aren't they can overthrow the law or desicion.
What does the ninth amendment claim? The ninth amendment claims that even if the right isn't listed doesn't mean you don't have it.
What type of government does the 10th amendment protect? It protects from excessive Federal power over the states.
What is the Bill of Rights? The Bill of Rights is a list of the first ten amendments to the constitution. These amendments state americans citizens rights in our country

What are the two ways to amend the constitution? Amendment is proposed by 2/3 of each house voting. Approved by 3/4 of state conventions. Congress proposes a amendment at a convention requested by 2/3 of states. Amendment is ratified by 3/4 of states.
What does it mean to amend the constitution? To change the constitution.
The first amendment protects freedom of speech unless...? The speech threatens public safety.
What is another name for the Executive Departments? The cabinet.
What is the main job of the executive departments? To help the President execute laws and work on making things better in their specific department.
What does the Department of Defense oversee? They are in charge of the military.
What does the state department oversee. Relations with foreign countries.
What does the Treasury department oversee? They are in charge of collecting taxes, making money and dealing with the nations economy.
What does the Department of Interior oversee? They protect and manage the nations public land
What does the department of homeland security oversee? They deal with terrorist threats and other problems.
What does the justice department oversee? They solve crimes and do detective work.
Explain congress's commerce clause? Congress's commerce clause is the power to regulate trade between foriegn nations and regulate interstate commerce and trade with Native Americans.
Explain congress's elastic clause? Congress's elastic clause hast to do with the constitution saying "Make any laws that are necessary and proper." This clause allows congress to stretch out (elastic) its powers and do things it might actually not have the power to do.
What is Federalism? Sharing equal power between state and federal government
What is the president in charge of as chief Diplomat? The president is in charge of making foriegn visits. Is in charge of making treaties with other countries. Nominates foreign ambassadors.
What is the president in charge of as commander in chief? Controls the military. Decides if he wants to take action with what force.
What is the president in charge of as the chief economic leader? He is in charge of the economy. Has the final say in economic desicions. Try's to create plans to help the economy. He hast to approve plans. taking care of the economy.
What is double Jeopardy and what amendment protects us from it? Double Jeopardy is the right to not be tried twice for the same charges. Protected by the 5th amendment
What does it mean to plead the 5th? Refuse to self incriminate oneself.
What is eminent domain? Eminent domain is the right that you cant have your property taken by the federal government for public use without the right payment.
