Why was America's first form of government a failure? It gave too much power to the states and the federal government could not tax
What was the goal of the constitutional convention? to revise the articles of confederation
What was the New Jersey plan? giving each state one vote in congress, favoring small states
What was the Virginia plan? giving each state a number votes depending on it's population, favoring big states
What was the 3/5th compromise? counting each slave as 3/5ths of a person in the population

What is the preamble? the introduction to the constitution which explains the goals of the new government
what was the great compromise? giving each state two votes in the senate but giving states votes based on population in the house of representatives
what does the word "bicameral" mean? two houses
What is the primary role of the Legislative branch? making laws
What is the primary role of the Executive branch? enforcing/executing the laws
What is the primary role of the Judicial branch? interpret the laws
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? You need to be at least 25 years old and have been a U.S citizen for 7 years. You also need to live in the district you represent.
What are the requirements to be a senator? You need to be at least 30 years old and have been a U.S citizen for 9 years. You also need to live in the state you represent
What are the requirements to be the President? You need to be at least 35 years old and have been living in the U.S for 15 years.
What are the powers of the president? To choose the members of the supreme court and veto bills, they are also the commander of the military
What are the powers of congress? To create laws.
How long is a house of representatives's term? 2 years
How long is a senator's term? 6 years
How long is the President's term? 4 years
How many supreme court justices are there? 9

What is the main job of the supreme court to decide whether laws are unconstitutional
Why are the supreme court justice's terms so long? so that they can't be fired after making an unpopular decision

What does the word "appeal" mean? make a serious or urgent request, typically to the public. or ask a higher court to look at your case

What does the first amendment protect? freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press and petition
what does the second amendment protect? the right to bare arms
what does the third amendment protect? the right to reject soldiers from living in your house
what does the fourth amendment protect? the right to unfair searches and seizures
the 5, 6, & 7 amendment protect your rights in... court
what does the eighth amendment protect? your rights against cruel and unusual punishment
what does the ninth amendment claim? that rights directly listed in the bill of rights do not overpower other rights

The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech unless... it causes harm to others
What is another name for the executive departments? the cabinet
What is the main job of the executive departments to advise the president
What does the department of defense oversee manages the armed forces and wars overseas
What does the State Department oversee? manage foreign affairs
What does the Treasury Department oversee? maintains a stable economy and manages the country's finances
What does the Department of Interior oversee? it maintains the country's national parks
What does the Department of Homeland Security oversee? protects the country from terrorist attacks and natural disasters
What does the the Justice Department oversee? it is responsible for enforcing laws and running the courts
Explain Congress's commerce clause. it gives Congress the power “to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes.”
Explain Congress's elastic clause. it gives any powers not directly listed in the constitution to the states
What is federalism? the federal principle or system of government.
What is the president in charge of as Commander and Chief? commanding the armed forces (navy, air force etc.) and wars overseas
What is the president in charge of as Chief Diplomat? meeting and discussing issues with foreign officials or leaders
What is the president in charge of as Chief Economic Adviser? making sure the U.S economy is strong by regulating funds etc.
What is double jeopardy and what amendment protects us from it? double jeopardy is being tried for the same crime twice, and we are protected from it by the Fifth Amendment
What does it mean to plead the 5th? It means that you do not have share information that will make you appear guilty
What is eminent domain? the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
