What was the name of the first form of American government? Articles of Confederation
Why was America's first form of government a failure? Could not tax people, to much power to states
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? To try and fix the Articles of Confederation or make a new one
What was the New Jersey plan? A structure of government that gave small states more power in congress, one state, one vote.
What was the Great compromise? It was a compromise between the New Jersey plan and the Virginia Plan.
What was the 3/5th Compromise? It was a compromise for how much slaves counted in the census.
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? It is the introduction.
What does the word “bicameral” mean? Two Houses: Congress is bicameral
What is the primary role of the Legislative branch? To make bills
What is the primary role of the Executive branch? To execute the laws
What is the primary role of the Judicial branch? To interpret the constitution and laws
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? 25 years of age, been a citizen for 7 years and live in the district they represent
What are the requirements to be a Senator? 30 years of age, been a citizen for 9 years and live in the state they represent
What are the requirements to be President? 35 years of age, been a citizen for 14 years and have been born in the USA
What are the powers of the President? To veto, approved and execute laws commander of military.
What are the powers of Congress? To make bills, approve nominations and impeach the president declare war.
How long is a House of Representative’s term? 2 Years
How long is a Senator’s term? 6 Years
How long is a President’s term? 4 Years (can only be elected twice)
What was the Virginia Plan? A structure of government that gave big states more power in congress, vote in congress determined by population.
How many Supreme Court Justices are there? 9
How long is a Supreme Court Justice’s term? For life or until retired
What is the main job of the Supreme Court? To interpret the constitution and laws
Why are Supreme Court Justice’s terms so long? So that they don't need to worry about the president not liking them because of there decisions
Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? John Glover Roberts, Jr
What are the three levels of the federal court system? District, Appeals, Supreme Court
What does the word “appeal” mean? To say that you got a unfair trial in a court.
What part of government has to approve all Supreme Court Justices? Congress
What is Judicial Review? To see if the branches of government are following the constitution
What does the 1st Amendment protect? Freedom of speech, press, religion, petition and gathering
What does the 2nd Amendment protect? Right to keep and bear arms
What does the 3rd Amendment protect? Protection from quartering soldiers
What does the 4th Amendment protect? No unreasonable searches or seizures
The 5, 6, and 7th Amendments protect your rights in …. Court
What does the 8th Amendment protect? No cruel or unusual punishments
What does the 9th Amendment claim? Rights not in constitution are still protected
What type of government does the 10th Amendment protect? Rights of states
What is the Bill of Rights? It is a document that states the first ten amendments or rights

What are the two ways to amend the Constitution? Have a 2/3 vote in both houses of congress or have 3/4 state vote

What is double jeopardy and what amendment protects us from it? Can't be tried again if innocent, 5th Amendmnt
What does it mean to plead the 5th? It means that you can't answer the question because it might make it seem that you did something bad
What is eminent domain? Government can take away property compensating with equal value
What is President in charge of as Chief Diplomat? In charge of relationships of countries
