Methods of Obtaining Citizenship By birth or by naturalization
Duties of Citizens Things we are all required to do. There are legal consequences for not completing duties. Ex. obey the law, pay taxes, defend the nation, serve in court, attend school
Responsibilities of Citizens Things we should do. There are no consequences for not completing a responsibility, but it hurts our nation. Ex. vote, participate in government, be informed, respect the rights of others
Electorate People who are entitled to vote in a election
Liberal A political ideology in which a person is open to new ideas, and is willing to initiate change or reform. They prefer a large government that can address social issues and provide programs to help groups achieve success.
Conservative A political ideology in which a person wants to keep things the way they are and want less change. They prefer a small government with less social programs and more individual responsibility for success.
Campaign Finance Reform Political effort to change involvement of money in politics in the United States, creation of campaign reform laws due to rise in cost, limits amount individuals can contribute
Political Action Committees (PACs) An organization established to raise money to support an issue or candidate
Electoral College The formal body which elects the President and Vice President of the United States
Electors Individuals from each state chosen by popular vote and their duty is to elect the president and vice president of the United States
Lobbying An organized effort to persuade government officials to support a particular group or position on an issue
Functions of Political Parties Recruiting and nominating candidates, Educating the public about campaign issues, helping candidates with elections, monitoring office holders, raising money for
Strategies for Evaluating Campaigns Separating fact from opinion, detecting bias, Evaluating sources, Identifying propaganda
Role of the Mass Media in Campaigns Identify candidates, Emphasize selected issues, Write editorials, political cartoons, & public op-ed pieces, broadcast different points of view
FCC Federal Communications Commission: Regulates radio and television
EPA Environmental Protection Agency: Formed in 1970, protects and enhances the environment
FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: Provides deposit insurance guaranteeing the safety of a depositor's accounts
