Consent of the Governed The people are the source of any and all governmental power
Limited Government Government is not all-powerful and may do only the things the people have given it the power to do
Rule of Law The government and those who govern are bound by the law, as those who are governed
Democracy A government in which people hold the power to rule and make laws
Representative Government A system of government in which people elect public officeholders to make laws and conduct government on the people's behalf
Charters of the VA Company of London Guaranteed the rights of Englishmen to the colonists, gave the colonists the King's permission to sail to the New World, claim all discovered lands for England and establish colonies there
Virginia Declaration of Rights A document that served as a model for the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America
Articles of Confederation Established the first form of national government for the independent states, allowing states to keep the major powers of government
Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom A document that stated freedom of religious beliefs and opinions
Constitution of the United States Established structure of the present national government of the United States
Preamble Introduction to the US Constitution, states the six goals of government
Bill of Rights First ten amendments to the Constitution, guarantees certain basic rights to all Americans
Article I Establishes the Legislative Branch of the federal government, Congress
Article II Establishes the Executive Branch of the federal government
Article III Establishes the Judicial Branch of the federal government
Purposes of US Government Keep Order, Protect Citizens, Provide public goods and services
Immigration Movement to a place to which one is not native in order to settle there
Naturalization The process by which aliens(people not from here) become citizens
League of Women Voters A democratic institution helping women play a larger role in public affairs
Due Process of Law A process by which the government must treat accused persons fairly according to rules established by law
