Chapter 18
Events Leading to the Civil War
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| the Expansion of Slavery | Due to the profits from cotton, people moved west to take advantage of this trend. Some wanted to take their slaves with them into these new territories, while others were strongly opposed to this. |
| Sectionalism | when you feel stronger loyalty to your area of the country rather than to the nation as a whole |
| the Compromise of 1850 | This plan made the South mad with the addition of California as a free state, and the North was upset by the Fugitive Slave Act. Popular sovereignty also would decide slavery in other parts of the Mexican Cession. |
| The Kansas Nebraska Act | This law allowed for popular sovereignty to determine whether or not Kansas and/or Nebraska would allow slavery or not. This seemed to overrule the Missouri Compromise. |
| Bleeding Kansas | Kansas was a violent place with illegal voting, riots, murders by pro- and anti-slavery forces |
| The Republican Party | This party wanted to stop the spread of slavery into the new western territories |
| The Know Nothing Party | This party was anti-immigrant (they were fearful that foreigners would take their unskilled jobs from them) |
| The Election of 1860 | The Democratic Party had two nominees since they couldn't agree on slavery. This allowed Lincoln to be elected, which triggered secession by the Southern states |
| Abraham Lincoln | He wanted to stop the spread of slavery, not get rid of it completely. He was not asking for full equality, just better treatment for African Americans |
| secession | the act of a state leaving the Union |
