Reconstruction

Post Civil War

TermDefinition
Reconstruction time period for bringing Confederate states back into the Union as well dealing with the changes caused by the ending of slavery
Radical Republicans these people didn't just want to go back the the pre-Civil War "normal"; they attempted to reform laws to include African Americans in the free world.
Andrew Johnson 17th President of the United States: although he supported the Union during the Civil War, he was opposed the the agenda of the Radical Republicans
the impeachment of Andrew Johnson He was tried for violating a new law saying that presidents needed Senate approval to remove Cabinet members. He did, was tried, but avoided conviction by a single vote.
the 13th amendment made slavery illegal
the 14th amendment guaranteed citizenship rights for African Americans; federal law was to be followed instead of the black codes (although enforcement of this was hard without the use of military force)
the 15th amendment gave African American males the right to vote. This had a big impact on several elections, any many African Americans served as Senators and Representatives for the very first time.
the election of 1876 Republicans Hayes vs. Democrat Tilden. It appeared that Tilden won, but they had a recount. Hayes wins, but troops had to be withdrawn from the South, basically ending any more changes during the Reconstruction period.
the Compromise of 1877 Hayes gets the presidency, but troops had to be removed from the South. This opened the door for the "separate but equal" logic, which is really just a form of legalized segregation.
