| Reconstruction | time period for bringing Confederate states back into the Union as well dealing with the changes caused by the ending of slavery |
| Radical Republicans | these people didn't just want to go back the the pre-Civil War "normal"; they attempted to reform laws to include African Americans in the free world. |
| Andrew Johnson | 17th President of the United States: although he supported the Union during the Civil War, he was opposed the the agenda of the Radical Republicans |
| the impeachment of Andrew Johnson | He was tried for violating a new law saying that presidents needed Senate approval to remove Cabinet members. He did, was tried, but avoided conviction by a single vote. |
| the 13th amendment | made slavery illegal |
| the 14th amendment | guaranteed citizenship rights for African Americans; federal law was to be followed instead of the black codes (although enforcement of this was hard without the use of military force) |
| the 15th amendment | gave African American males the right to vote. This had a big impact on several elections, any many African Americans served as Senators and Representatives for the very first time. |
| the election of 1876 | Republicans Hayes vs. Democrat Tilden. It appeared that Tilden won, but they had a recount. Hayes wins, but troops had to be withdrawn from the South, basically ending any more changes during the Reconstruction period. |
| the Compromise of 1877 | Hayes gets the presidency, but troops had to be removed from the South. This opened the door for the "separate but equal" logic, which is really just a form of legalized segregation. |
