Government

TermDefinition
Judicial Courts: The court systems of local, state, and federal governments, responsible for interpreting the laws passed by the legislative branch and enforced by the executive branch.
Jurisdicton: The authority of a court to hear a case
Plaintiff: In civil law, the party who brings a suit or some legal action against another
Original Juridiction: The power of a court to hear a case first, before any other court
Criminal Case: A case in which a defendant is tried for commiting a crime as defined by law
Civil Case: A case involving a noncriminal matter such as a contract dispute or a claim of patent infringement
Docket: A courts list of cases to be heard
Majority Opinion: officially called the opinion of the court
Precedent: Court decisions that stands as an example to be followed in future, similar cases
Dissenting Opinion: Written explanation of the views of one or more judges who disagree with a decision reached by a majority of the court
Redress: Satisfaction of a claim payment
Court - Martial: A court composed of military personnel, for the trail of those accused of violating military law
Civil Liberties: The guaruntees of the safety of persons, opinions, and property from the arbitrary acts of government including freedom of speech and freedom of religion
Civil Rights: A term used for those positive acts of government that seek to make constituational guaruntees a realityfor all people
Alien: Foreign-born resident, or noncitizen
Process of Incorporation: Most of the guaruntees in the Bill Of Rights into the 14th Ammendments Due Process Clause
Establishment Clause: Separates the church ans state
Free Exercise Clause: The 2nd part of the constituational guaruntee of religious freedom, which guaruntees to each person to the right to believe whatever he or she chooses to believe in matters of religion
Libel: False and malicious use of printed works
Slander: False and malicious use of spoken words
Sedition: The crime of attempting to over throw the government by force,or to disrupt its lawful activities with violence
Sedition Speech: The advocating, or urging, of an attempt to over throw the government by force or to disrupt its lawful activities with violence
Prior Restraint: The government cannot curb ideas before they are expressed
Symbolic Speech: Expression by conduct
Assemble: To gather with one another in order to express views on public matters
Right of Association: Right to associate with others to promote political, economic, and other social causes
