| Empire | A group of nations ruled over by another country |
| Colony | A country or region that is ruled by another country |
| The Treaty of Tordesillas | An agreement that divided the 'New World' between Spain and Portugal. |
| Clinker Built | Ships that were built with overlapping planks of wood to give them strength against the Atlantic waves |
| Lateen Sails | Triangular sails that allowed ships to sail against the wind. |
| Caravel | A ship that is clinker built and has lateen sails |
| Compass | An instrument which gives direction |
| Latitude | Distance from the equator |
| Quadrant | Instrument which gives latitude by looking at the position of the North Star in the sky |
| Astrolabe | An instrument which gives latitude by looking at the position of the sun in the sky. |
| Log and line | A way of calculating the speed a ship is going by counting knots |
| Conquistador | Spanish word for 'soldier', referring to those who conquered the 'New World' for Spain |
| Aztec | Native empire in Mexico, conquered by Cortes |
| Inca | Native empire in Peru, conquered by Pizarro |
