Key Vocabulary

Empire A group of nations ruled over by another country
Colony A country or region that is ruled by another country
The Treaty of Tordesillas An agreement that divided the 'New World' between Spain and Portugal.
Clinker Built Ships that were built with overlapping planks of wood to give them strength against the Atlantic waves
Lateen Sails Triangular sails that allowed ships to sail against the wind.
Caravel A ship that is clinker built and has lateen sails
Compass An instrument which gives direction
Latitude Distance from the equator
Quadrant Instrument which gives latitude by looking at the position of the North Star in the sky
Astrolabe An instrument which gives latitude by looking at the position of the sun in the sky.
Log and line A way of calculating the speed a ship is going by counting knots
Conquistador Spanish word for 'soldier', referring to those who conquered the 'New World' for Spain
Aztec Native empire in Mexico, conquered by Cortes
Inca Native empire in Peru, conquered by Pizarro
