TermDefinition
biopsy A long thin instrument passed through the lumen of the insertion tube to remove a specimen.
colonoscope Basically a sigmoidoscope but with a longer insertion tube.
colonoscopy The visualization of the rectum and the entire colon using a colonscope.
endoscope Instruments that consists of a tube and an optical system that is used for direct visual inspection of organs or cavities.
insufflate A small amount of air blown.
melena The darkening of the stool caused by the presence of blood in an amount of 50 ml or greater.
occult blood Hidden or non visible blood.
peroxidase A substance that is able to transfer oxygen from hydrogen peroxide to oxidize guaiac, causing guaiac to turn blue.
sigmoidoscope Flexible Fiberoptic.
sigmoidoscopy Visual Examination of the mucosa of the rectum and the lower third of the colon using a flexible fiberoptic sigmoidoscope.
