Speaker of the House The presiding officer of a legislative body who moderates debate, makes rulings on procedure, announces results of votes, etc.
Standing Committee a permanent committee, as of a legislature, society, etc., intended to consider all matters pertaining to a designated subject.
Redistricting The process of redrawing U.S. electoral district boundaries
Plessy v. Ferguson Ruled racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal" Constitutional
Brown v. Board of Education Overturned Plessy v. Ferguson "Separate is inherently unequal"
Lawrence v. Texas Invalidated sodomy laws in Texas as well as thirteen other states. Over turned Bowers v. Hardwick
Thirteenth Amendment Abolished slavery
Fourteenth Amendment Addresses citizenship rights & equal protection of the laws
Fifteenth Amendment prohibiting the restriction of voting rights “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
Equal Rights Protection Clause "No state shall deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the law"
Civil Rights Group protection of freedom by the governement
Civil Liberties Protection of individuals' freedoms from the government
Barron v. Baltimore Established a precedent on whether the Bill of rights could be applied to state government
Gideon v. Wainwright Courts are required under the 14th Amendment to provide counsel in criminal cases to represent defendants who are unable to pay their own attorneys
Affirmative Action the encouragement of increased representation of women and minority-group members, especially in employment.
Griswold v. CJ Ruled that the Constitution protects a right to privacy
Miranda v. Arizona Ruled that statements are only valid if there is proof of prosecution informing the defendant of their rights to an attorney & self-incrimination prior to questioning
Civil Rights Act of 1964 Outlawed major forms of discrimination, ended unequal voter requirements & racial segregation
1965 Voting Rights Act Prohibits discrimination in voting
Filibuster The use of irregular or obstructive tactics by a member of a legislative assembly to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored or to force a decision against the will of the majority.
Vote of Cloture A motion to end debate over changing Senate Rules requiring 2/3 of those Senators present & voting to vote in favor of ending debate
Gerrymandering the dividing of a state, county, etc., into election districts so as to give one political party a majority in many districts while concentrating the voting strength of the other party into as few districts as possible.
Reapportionment The redistribution of representation in a legislative body.
Bill of Rights a formal statement of the fundamental rights of the people of the United States, incorporated in the constitution as Amendments 1–10, and in all state constitutions.
Freedom Summer The summer in '64 when nearly one thousand people went to help blacks register to vote
The Establishment Clause Clause that separates the church and state
The Free Exercise Clause Permits citizens the right to practice any religion
Selective Incorporation The process binding the Bill of Rights to the state through the 14th Amendment
