Federalism The idea of the division of government into levels (central, state and local)
Division of powers Principle that certain powers are assigned to the National Government and some to the States
Expressed powers Powers the Government has written specifically in the Constitution
Implied powers Powers that are suggested by the expressed powers
Exclusive powers Powers only the National Government has
Reserved powers Powers neither granted to the National Government nor denied to the States
Concurrent powers Powers that both the National and State governments have
Supremacy Clause Says that the Constitution is the highest form of law in the United States
Commerce power Exclusive power of Congress to regulate interstate and foreign trade
Bankruptcy A legal process through which a person's assets are distributed to those whom debts are owed
Copyright The legal right of a person to sell their own creative works
Patent A license issued to an inventor granting them exclusive rights to make and sell their product
Naturalization The process through which an immigrant becomes a citizen
Necessary and Proper Clause Part of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to make all laws needed to execute its powers
Liberal constructionist One who argues for a broad interpretation of the Constitution
Strict constructionist One who argues for a strict interpretation of the Constitution
Impeach To bring formal charges against a public official, the House can impeach civil officers of the US
Perjury Lying under oath
