The Republican Party formed to stop spread of slavery.
If a Republican was elected President in 1860, Southerners threatened to secede from the U.S.
Sam Houston refused to be governor if Texas seceded from the Union.
Most fighting in Texas centered on Confederates trying to keep the ports open.
