Why did most Americans want a weak government in for the form of a republic? So no one person abused their power.
Who adopted the Articles of Confederation in September 1777? The Second Continental Congress
The Articles of Confederation became the government of the US in 1781. If it was adopted in 1777, why did it take 4 years to become official? The war had to end and all states had to approve it.
What 5 things could congress do under the AOC? -Make treaties/alliances -Maintain armed forces -Declare war and peace -Issue/Borrow $$$ -Manage affairs w/ Native Americans
What lands did the US gain from the treaty of Paris? Land between Appalachians and Mississippi
Define the Land Ordinance of 1785 Created a plan for surveying and selling land north of the Ohio River.
Define townships. 6 miles long & 6 miles wide
Define sections. 1 mile long and 1 mile wide
Which 5 states were created out of the Northwest Territory? Remember: Odious Images Include Worthless Marimbas Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan
What three things did the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 do to aide the Northwest Territory? -Established rules for territories to become states. -Included a bill of rights for each state -Outlawed slavery
Why did people move to the Northwest Territory? The land was cheap.
What were 3 issues the US faced against foreign nations? -Britain did not remove all troops from N. America. -Britain did not allow Americans to trade in the West Indies. -Spain closed lower Miss. R. to all American ships.
What were 4 financial issues the US faces post-war? -Huge war debt -Printed $ was worthless -Congress owed soldiers $ -Country enters depression
Why did Daniel Shays lead his rebellion? Farmers lost their land and were put into debtor's prison.
What was the effect of Shay's rebellion? -Forced MA courts to close. -Proved that gov't could not control violence and unrest in the colonies
Where and when was the constitutional convention held? The summer of 1787 in Philadelphia, Penn
When did the delegates of the convention meet? May – September, 1787
What were the delegates called? Framers or Founding Fathers
What 4 major issues were visited at the constitutional convention? -How states were to represented in Congress -How to count slaves as part of the population for representation -How to vote for members of Congress -Whether or not to ban slavery
Who wrote and proposed the Virginia plan? James Madison wrote it and Edmund Randolph proposed it.
Which plan called for three branches of gov't? Both!
Which plan called for a unicameral legislature? The New Jersey plan.
Which plan thought that each state should be represented in congress with one vote? The New Jersey plan
Which plan believed that the federal gov't should have the power to tax? The Virginia plan
Who did the New Jersey plan favor? Small states
Who proposed the NJ plan? William Paterson
Who proposed the Great Compromise? Roger Sherman of CT
Why did the southern states want to count slaves as part of the population? To gain more delegates in the House of Reps. & in Electoral College.
Why didn’t northern states think that slaves should count? Because slaves were considered property.
What did both groups agree on in regards to slaves? Slaves shouldn’t have the right to vote.
Define the Three-Fifths Compromise Each slave would count as 3/5th of a person toward each state’s population for representation purposes
Define the Slave Trade Clause Forbade Congress from voting against the international slave trade until 1808.
Define the Fugitive Slave Clause Forced all citizens to return fugitive slaves to their owners
What state became the first to ratify the constitution? Delaware
What did federalists believe the constitution would do? * Create a strong central government * Maintain order with the court system
What did anti-federalists believe the constitution would do? * Take away American freedoms * Create a central government run by a small but educated group of people * Favor the wealthy instead of the common man
