Beginning Directional Terms from A & P
| Front | Back |

| Lateral | Toward the side; away from the midsagittal plane |
| Medial | Toward the midsagittal plane; away from the side |
| Anterior | Toward the front of the body |
| Posterial | Toward the back (rear) of the body |
| Superior | Toward the top of the body |
| Interior | Toward the bottom of the body |
| Dorsal | Along (toward) the vertebral surface of the body |
| Ventral | Along (toward) the belly surface of the body |
| Caudad | Toward the tail |
| Cephalad | Toward the head |
| Proximal | Toward the trunk (describes relatice posistion in a limb or other appendage) |
| Distal | Away from the trunk or point of attachment |
| Visceral | Toward an internal organ; awat from the outer wall (describes positions inside a body cavity) |
| Deep | Toward the wall; away from the internal structures |
| Superficial | Toward the surface of a part; away from the inside |
| Medullay | Refers to an inner region or medulla |
| Cortical | Refers to an outer region or cortex |
