Anatomical Planes

QuestionAnswer
Superficial (external) Toward or at the body surface (skin is superifical to the skeletal muscles
Deep (internal) Away from the body surface (lungs are deep to the skin)
Ipsilateral On the same side (right hand and right foot)
Contralateral On opposite sides (right hand and left foot)
Coronal (frontal) plane Lies vertically and divides body into anterior and posterior parts
Median (midsagittal) plane Specific sagittal plane that lies vertically in the midline (dividing the left and right into equal halves)
Parasagittal plane Sagittal plane that lies vertically but does NOT go through the midline (meaning it cuts the body into two UNEQUAL halves)
Transverse plane Horizontally divides body into superior and inferior parts
