Atonality Absence of tonality;Music characterized by method of organization without reference to a key or tonal centre, one using the chromatic scale impartially and autonomously. (Associated with free jazz in late 50s and 60s)
Arpeggio The production of tones in a chord in rapid succession;not simultaneously
Antiphony Formally known as call and response. A musical form of response, as of 1 chair answering another. Music characterized by the alternations of 2 or more different parts.
Anacrusis Sometimes called pick up. The term applied to the initial notes before the measure. These notes add a tremendous amount of forward motion to line or melody.
ABAC song form Musical form in which each section is usually 8 bars and has 3 themes(A,B,C)
AABA song form Musical form prominent as jazz matured through 20s. Comprises of 8 bar theme (A) played twice. Contrasting melody theme (B) that follows, usually 8 bars long, before A returns. Second section and 3rd A section usually varies.
Arranger "unsung leader" The person who plans the form of the band's performance.
Backbeat Heavy emphasis on the beats 2 and 4. As played by drummer(usually) on the snare drum. Rest of drums/high hat can be used to play quieter backbeats.
Bass Low pitched stringed instrument and one of the members in the rhythm section in a jazz band.
Back phrasing Musical technique where the singer momentarily delays entry of next phrase. Occurs mostly in ballads, generally conveys loose feeling, as if singer/player is delivering the song spontaneously.
Bitonality Simultaneous use of 2 different tonalities and keys.
Blue Note Microtonal variant usually flattened from the pure intonation of the note. Associates almost exclusively with 3rd,5th, and 7th degrees of the scale. Freely used in Jazz and Blues.
Blues An African American folk music that developed in the 19th century. Harmonized,notated, and published in early 20s. Typical blues text has stanza of 3 lines, 2nd is repetition of 1st. Tells moods of depression,natural disasters, or loss of a loved one.
Blues 2 As blues urbanizes, evocated into happier moods.Most common is 12 bar blues or 16th bar form. Today, blues can refer to vocal blues song or simply 12 bar blues, most basic musical form in jazz.
Blues Scale Form of scale that incorporates the principle notes used in blues. Most often, 1-b3-4-#4-5-b7.
Break A short rhythmic - melodic cadenza interpolated by a soloist as a feature- Often a band plays in stop time while the soloist improvises breaks between the band chords.
