| Constitution | a written plan for a government that states how it is organized and how its power is assigned |
| legislative branch | a branch of US government that makes/passes the laws. |
| executive branch | a branch of US government that carries out the laws. |
| judicial branch | a branch of US government that interprets and applies the laws. |
| Bill of Rights | the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution that guarantee basic rights of citizens and limit the power of the federal government |
| amend | to make a change |
| checks and balances | a system in which separate powers ( such as the 3 branches of government) amend or cancel the acts of each other to even the balance of power. |
| Framers of the Constitution | men who wrote the US Constitution. |
| Preamble | an introduction to the Constitution. |
| amendment | formal change to a document or law such as the US constitution |
| articles | a section of a written document |
| compromise | an agreement where both sides agree to give up something they want |
| democracy | form of government in which political control is held by all the people either directly or through their elected representative |
| rights | protected freedoms |
| responsibilities | duties of citizens such as paying taxes, obeying laws and serving on juries |
| First Amendment | amendment to the constitution guaranteeing the freedoms of speech, religion, press, petition and assembly. |
| laws | a system of rules that govern a group of people |
| separation of power | the idea that the power of a government should be split into groups so that one group cannot take too much power |
