Muscle Tissue

Ch. 5--Muscle Tissue, nervous tissue and membrane

QuestionAnswer
Cells in muscle tissues are called called muscle fibers due to their elongated shape
Muscle tissues are_________meaning they can shorten and thicken __________tissues are contractile
three types of muscle tissue skeletal, smooth, and cardiac are
Skeletal muscle tissue forms forms muscles that usually attach to bones and that are controlled by conscious effort
Skeletal muscle tissue is under under conscious control and is therefore called voluntary
Striations of skeletal muscle tissue alternating light and dark cross-markings
Skeletal muscle tissue functions functions to move body parts and in swallowing and breathing
Smooth muscle tissue is called called smooth because it lacks striations
Smooth muscle tissue located located in walls of most hollow internal organs
Smooth muscle involuntary because it cannot be consciously controlled
Cardiac muscle tissue is located muscle tissue located only in the heart
An intercalated disc a specialized intercellular junction located only in cardiac muscle tissue
Like skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle is striated
Like smooth muscle, cardiac muscle is involuntary
Nervous tissues are found found in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves
neurons The basic cells of nervous tissue
Epithelial membranes composed of epithelial and underlying connective tissues
Three types of epithelial membranes serous, mucous, and cutaneous
Serous membranes line line the body cavities that lack opening to the outside and secrete serous fluid
Mucous membranes line line the cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body
The cutaneous membrane called skin
Neurons, or nerve cells sensitive to changes in their surroundings and respond to stimulation of impulses along nerve fibers
neuroglial cells serve serve to support the neurons and bind the nervous tissue together
Neuroglial cell carry on phagocytosis and bring nutrients to the neurons as well as remove waste from cells
Epithelial membranes cover body surfaces and line body cavities and organs
Synovial membranes line joints
Serous membranes line body cavities
Mucous membranes line the cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body
