Exam 12: Peds Meds

TermDefinition
Drugs ordered in teaspoons should be measured in milliliters
Intramuscular (IM) Administration 25-30 gauge needle.
Intramuscular (IM) Injection sites Infants: Vastus Lateralis. (Ventogluteal) 18mo or older: deltoid.
Subcutaneous Administration 26-30 gauge needle. Inject at 90 degrees. Not necessary to aspirate blood.
Subcutaneous Sites Common sites include center third of the lateral aspect of the upper arm, the abdomen, and center third of the anterior thigh.
Intradermal Administration Frequently administered to children, but technique differs little from the method used with adults. Avoid the medial side of the arm when giving injection into the volar surface of forearm (more sensitive, hurts more) Use TB syringe and 30 gauge needle
Types of IV Devices Peripheral Intermittent Infusion Device. Central Venous Access Device (VAD).
Factors influencing the type of VAD a.Reason for placement (diagnosis) b.Length of therapy c.Risk to the patient in placement of the catheter d.Availability of resources to assist the family in maintaining the catheter
