QuestionAnswer
Phrenology Assigning different mental functions to different parts of the brain.
Phineas Gage Man who had a pole driven through his skull and suffered brain damage to particular regions. Showed personality changes according tho which areas were damaged.
Neuron Doctrine The brain is composed of neurons and cells. Neurons are polarised with respect to function.
Cajal's observations Diversity of neuron appearance. Complexity of neuron appearance not associated with complexity of function. Complexity of brain not due to number of neurons.
Two aspects of consciousness -Passive: Conscious experiences ie awareness of things -Active: Conscious awareness of intentions
What makes the human brain particularly creative? Large pre-frontal cortex
How does brain structure differ in hominids? Homo genus has very large forebrain, human almost obscures mid and hindbrain.
How has evolution shaped the human brain? Relative size has increased dramatically. Forebrain is much bigger the most other organisms. Thought to be due to sexual selection behaviour.
