| Phineas Gage | Man who had a pole driven through his skull and suffered brain damage to particular regions. Showed personality changes according tho which areas were damaged. |
| Neuron Doctrine | The brain is composed of neurons and cells. Neurons are polarised with respect to function. |
| Cajal's observations | Diversity of neuron appearance. Complexity of neuron appearance not associated with complexity of function. Complexity of brain not due to number of neurons. |
| Two aspects of consciousness | -Passive: Conscious experiences ie awareness of things -Active: Conscious awareness of intentions |
| What makes the human brain particularly creative? | Large pre-frontal cortex |
| How does brain structure differ in hominids? | Homo genus has very large forebrain, human almost obscures mid and hindbrain. |
| How has evolution shaped the human brain? | Relative size has increased dramatically. Forebrain is much bigger the most other organisms. Thought to be due to sexual selection behaviour. |
