Movements refers to joints
Extension straightens or opens {lightbulb, look up} [sagittal]
Hyperextension straightens or opens beyond normal range of motion [sagittal]
Flexion bends, brings bones closer {bend over, bow head} [sagittal]
Adduction (appendages) brings limb medial {add to body} [frontal]
Abduction (appendages) laterally away from midline {abduct, carry away} [frontal]
Medial (Internal) Rotation (shoulder & hip) limb turns twd midline
Lateral (external) Rotation (shoulder & hip) limb turns away from midline
Rotation (axial skeleton: head & verteral column) [transverse]
Circumduction (shoulder & hip) cone-shaped movement (flex, ext, add, abd)
Lateral Flexion (axial skeleton) head or vertebral col. bend laterally {PU briefcase, talk on phone}
Supination (forearm & feet) pivot - radius & ulna parallel {carry soup}
Pronation (forearm & feet) pivot - radius crosses over ulna - turns palm down {prone to spill}
Opposition (thumb: carpometacarpal) - thumbpad points to pinky
Inversion (feet) elevates medial side, medial sole {turn in}
Eversion (feet) elevates lateral side, moves sole laterally {turn out}
Plantar Flexion (ankle) point foot to earth {pressing gas pedal}
Dorsiflexion (ankle) point toes to sky {let off gas pedal}
Protraction (clavicle, head, & jaw) movement anteriorly {protrude}
Retraction (clavicle, head, & jaw) movement posteriorly {retreat}
Elevation (scapula & jaw) movement superiorly {shrug or close mouth}
Depression (scapula & jaw) movement inferiorly {parralell bars, open mouth}
