| Checks and Balances | power is shared between the different branches of government so that one person or part of government cannot dominate the others. |
| Federalism | Exclusive and concurrent (shared) powers of the state and national government. |
| Representation | people elect others to act on their behalf. |
| Popular sovereignty | power is held by the people |
| Separation of Powers | division of powers among the different branches of government |
| Due Process of Law | protection from arbitrary denial of life, liberty, property. (5th and 14th amendments) |
| Judicial Review | power of the courts to say that something is unconstitutional. |
| Limited Government | government is limited to protecting our basic rights. |
| Majority Rule vs. Minority Rights | wishes of the greater number of people in society versus the rights of the few. |
| Civil Rights | Basic and fundamental rights of every member of a society. |
| Constitution | a plan for government/ document that explains the limits on government. And rights of citizens. |
| Communism | political system with one party government and state ownership of property. |
| Articles of Confederation | first plan of government in the United States |
| Presidential System | president is elected separately from congress. (USA) |
