Civics Ch. 13 Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Incorporated a locality with an officially organized government that provides services to residents.
City Charter a document that grants power to a local government.
Home Rule allows cities to write their own charters, to choose their own type of government, and to manage their own affairs, although they still have to follow state laws.
Ordinances a law, usually of a city or county
Strong-Mayor System the mayor has a strong executive powers, such as the power to veto ordinances the city council passes, appoint carious city officials, and write the city budget.
Weak-Mayor System the mayor's authority is limited. The council, not the mayor, appoints department heads and makes most policy decisions.
At-Large Elections an election for an area as a whole; for example, statewide
Special District a unit of government that deals with a specific function, such as education, water supply, or transportation.
Metropolitan Area a central city and it's surrounds suburbs.
Suburbs communities near or around cities.
County normally the largest territorial and political subdivision of a state.
County Seats a town where the county courthouse is located
Town a political unit that is larger than a village and smaller than a city
Town Meetings a gathering of local citizens to discuss and vote on important issues
Townships a subdivision of a county that has its own government
Village smallest unit of local government
